Hi. My name is Julie Begbie and I am The Reading Gal!  I was born and raised in Reno, Nevada, and have a passion to help my hometown reach their reading goals!

Growing up, I attended Roy Gomm Elementary School, Billinghurst Middle School, and Reno High School.  From there I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Education from the University of Nevada, Reno.  I am state certified to teach English for grades 7-12.

I began my teaching career in 2002, teaching English/Language Arts at K.O. Knudson Middle School in Las Vegas, Traner Middle School in Reno, the University of Nevada, Reno and Reno High School.  I loved every moment of working with students and helping them increase their knowledge, work ethic and confidence.

After the first 10 years of teaching, I noticed gaps in what I was teaching and how my students were learning. I realized that I was unable to help the struggling readers in my classroom because I didn’t know how to actually teach someone to read.  I could teach them all about Shakespeare and Beowulf, but I was untrained in teaching early literacy. So, I knew it was time to go back to school.

Since 2013, I have earned a Master in Arts as a Literacy Specialist and a Doctorate in Literacy Studies to help me best serve my students and my tutees. I want to help both struggling and excelling students be the best readers possible, so that literacy is a catalyst to their success!
